A train set is always a popular gift, especially with young boys, although there's no particular reason why girls can't have fun with them too.
They are just a little expensive compared with some of the other toys on the market - but they last for years. They'll be in use long after the video games and consoles have been recycled into plastic forks, shopping bags and (probably) more video games.
Some people even pass them on to the next generation. Inheriting Dad's old train set, or at least some rolling stock, is really very common.
Needless to say, the name that is synonymous with toy train sets, in the UK at least, is Hornby. The company was founded in 1938 and is still going strong today.
